Okay, this just struck me as being funny. And, because I am a Star Trek fan, I don't get it.
Why don't more females choose career paths in computer science?
Because they are not as good at math as males? Shake your head "no."
Because they are worse at science? No.
Because they don't like computers? Again, no.
Genetics? Still, no.
According to research by Sapna Cheryan, PhD, at the University of Washington, reported in Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, it is because when female students visit the work places for computer science they find them filled with things like "Star Trek posters, video game boxes and Coke cans... Women had a lower regard for the profession after seeing the stereotypically male work areas."
Here's the lesson, guy geeks: if you want females to join you in your work place, clean up all of the "guy stuff" decorating the office!

Amen! I can't stand working in a messy area. I would end up being a maid if I worked in a place like that. Thank goodness I'm going to college to be a Radiologist!
WOW that is so amazingly right, why would women want to go to work where there is guy stuff everywhere. If it was more of a bland or just general deceration then women would be more willing to go to work where the female poplutaion is so low.
I find that hilarious! I know a handful of girls that would die to work in that atmosphere, but more women shutter at the thought of 'BABYSITTING' at work with a bunch of 'BOYS'! Which is what you would feel like in that kind of space. It is harder to take a man serious when he has that stuff all around his work area, no matter how old he is.
I am not married but I can tell you that when I go workout with close friends it does help our friendship. we have a closer bond by exercising together and getting in shape. and working out definately makes you feel better afterwards!

Now as for this star trek decor research...I am a fan of the show and I wouldnt mind all of the posters :) but then again computers confuse me so i wouldnt be in this profession anyway

I totally agree ,but did we ever think that these particular men do not want women working with them. I think this would be the impression I get if I was to see Star Trek memorabilia all around an office.
I totally agree....if I was to work in an office with all men and lots of Star Trek memorabilia I would get the impression "no women are welcome". But if there where firemen of the year calenders hanging all around that would be a different story!!!
I agree...I worked in Information Systems as an assistant for 6 years and they were such dork and had the posters to prove it! They kind of got on my nerves (not to be mean). If I wanted to go in that field of work I would still work there!
Dr. Grady,
I probably would have agreed with the women are not a smart as men at math comment if that would of been all that was said (hehe) because, of obvious reasons I am not at all good at math.
I'm a guy and i agree that guys areas in general are a lot more messy than girls areas usually especially when theres a game system lying next to a big screen tv. Its just how we are ladies.
I worked for a innternet company in tulsa and i was the only female there it was horrible it was like i was at a nerd convention
I think it's more the creepy nerds lurking around the girls that truly scares them off haha. But, i can't say i disagree. I know plenty of people that meet the Trekkie description.
Ha! this is great! I can so see that being the reasoning! Even most of the "Geek Girls" don't flaunt their love for Star Trek or things of that sort. Guys on the other hand have no problem.
Keely took the words right out of my mouth.
well would guys that are want to work where there is sex and the city posters, tampons and make up everywhere probably not lol. so i totally agree! i have never in my life watched star trek or star wars etc... lol
