We talked about clinical hypnosis in my General Psychology classes this week as we worked our way through the chapter on States of Consciousness.
I started by suggesting that my students close their eyes, take a deep breath, hold it for a second, release it and relax. Then I suggested that before they opened their eyes they clear their mind of everything they knew about hypnosis.
Why did I start that way?
1. It was relaxing.
2. Almost everything people know about hypnosis comes from entertainers, and most of it is wrong.
3. All hypnosis is based on suggestion, so I began with suggestions.
The hypnotic state is defined as a state in which one is highly relaxed and receptive to suggestions.
Last night I read an interesting report on research at London's University College that if you call hypnosis something else it is not as effective. Some therapists have called it "visualization" or "relaxation therapy" because of perceived stereotypic beliefs about hypnosis (false beliefs of what it is and how it works).
What the researchers found was, "Therapists who embrace the term 'hypnosis' have more success in treating patients. That's because the therapy relies largely on the patient's openness to suggestion, and possibly even their preconceived notions of what hypnosis is all about."
In other words, even if their preconceptions are wrong, they facilitate successful therapy that uses hypnosis. Do you see the power of suggestion and expectations even in that? If they expect hypnosis to work, and have a therapist who uses hypnosis, it is more likely to work.
Now, when I count backward to 1 you will open your eyes and not remember anything I have written in this post. But you will feel very relaxed, think that I am one of the best writers you have ever read, and tell someone that they need to start reading my Blog.

OMG! Im so relaxed. Dr. Grady you are the best writer ever and my boyfriend thinks so too. Lol I went to a leadership camp last summer and on the last day they had a hypnotist speak. He had about 20 people come up on stage and sit in chairs. He began to talk and they all began to fall sideways in their chairs. Also some people in the audience started to fall backwards in their chairs. It was an awesome experience and really funny. Before I walked into your class that day i thought that you were being hypnotized by the other person. Now I know you really hypnotize yourself.
Is this why hypnosis works on smokers? because they want to quit so they convince themselves that they are "cured"? I once witnessed a hypnosis at FFA camp and they girl on stage actually squaked like a chicken :) it was interesting. so did she convince herself that she was a chicken?

You are the best writer there is and I have told everyone I know about your blog....Thanks Dr Grady.
I have never be hypnotized nor witnessed one but I think it would be really interesting to be apart of one. I would like to be hypnotized one day just to see what it felt like, or if I could even remember the feeling and what all happened through the process.

Everyday my husband ask me " Did you see what Dr. Grady wrote on his blog today?" I am positive we don't need to be hypnotized to see your greatness. Thanks for being a great teacher.I sure could use some hypnotizing before exams. Do you think we can do this before our test in your class?
I'm still not sure about the whole hypnosis thing. I do know i would not be open to it because I'm kinda like you said "I like to be in control all the time". Hopefully i may be open to it one day, I would like to experience it.

My brother in laws senior class had hired a hypnosis to hypnotize the whole senior class it was the funniest thing i have ever seen we video taped it of course he still swears he didnt remember a thing!
I would really like to see someone hypnotized and possibly be hypnotized myself. But if I was to be hypnotized I would want it to be just me and the person hypnotizing me.
I don't have a "professional" opinon but I think that hypnotizing is very effective. I have seen things of TV and learned about it in your class. I would love to stop smoking so I am considering getting hypnotized.
you are so awesome best teacher ever !!!!! i am so relaxed now lol
My husband doubts there is any type of hypnosis! This really explains his doubts considering that it isn't someone doing it to someone else, it's really you beleiving or wanting what is being said during "hypnosis".
